How to Consolidate Your Bills

There are many advantages that bill consolidation affords you. It enables you to manage your finances more efficiently so that you can start a concerted effort towards setting up savings. Less time is spent organizing so you have adequate time refining and sticking to your budgets. Also, bill consolidation helps you make payments on time and consumers usually get a lot of rewards for good credit behaviour.

So how does one go about consolidating bills?

Cut Down on Bills

When you think about it, this is actually just common sense. In order to have less financial problems, eliminate unimportant items that accumulate bills. Areas that you can apply this to are:

• Cellular Phones. Must each member of the family have his own cellphone? It would be more economical to have a phone for only the working members of the household. If this is not possible in your situation, then make sure to acquire services from one provider only, or better yet, opt for a family plan so you only have to worry about one monthly phone bill.

• Credit Cards and Other Charge Accounts. Credit cards are the surest way to get yourselves into deep debt. Check to see if you can transfer balances to a card that charges lower interest rates. Or better yet, close some of your credit card accounts. The fewer temptations there are, the less you spend. A good number is two credit cards per person. Store charge cards pose the same problem and some of them charge interest that is even higher than credit card rates. Maintain only one store charge card.

• Payments. Make your payments work for you by paying on time and paying in cash whenever possible. Consumers usually get discounts or rebates for on-time and cash payments. For insurance bills, try to allot a larger figure than usual. If you do this, you will only have to pay a few times a year and might even be eligible for discounts.

Go at it Online

Online payments also help you save time and money. The advent of the Internet has enabled people to pay practically all types of bills via the Web. Some phone and cable companies have an online payment option, as well as banks and other lending agencies.

Guidelines for Bill Management

While organizing your bills may not necessarily translate to saved cash, this will save you precious time that you might otherwise spend doing enjoyable activities. Try to set up all of your bill payments around the time that you get your salary.

Some creditors and banks allow you to choose payment dates. You’ll spend less time running around paying different bills on different days. Set up a monitoring system – a spreadsheet, if you will – to help you keep better track of important items. A lot of times, seeing something on paper keeps us in line and helps us achieve goals.
