How to File for Unemployment in California

The state of California provides unemployment insurance to residents that have lost their jobs. Unemployment insurance gives financial assistance to individuals while they are looking for work. This assistance can cover housing, clothing and food expenses. In order for unemployed residents to be eligible, they must first file an application at the California Employment Development Department (EDD). The agency accepts applications submitted online or via phone, fax or mail.

Requirements for Qualification

For unemployed individuals to be able to claim unemployment insurance, they must first be deemed eligible by the EDD. The agency will base their decisions on the information that they collect through information submitted by applicants or through interviews. Additionally, here are some other criteria that will help determine eligibility. The applicant must:

• Have accumulated an adequate amount of earnings during their base period.

• Be out of a job through no fault of his own.

• Meet ongoing eligibility requirements as they claim insurance weekly.

• Be approved for training.

• Be ready to work immediately.

Guidelines to Facilitate Applications

Before proceeding with your application, there some tips that may help make the application process go smoothly.

• Delays usually happen when applicants neglect to provide accurate information being asked by the EDD. To prevent this, make sure you fill out all forms thoroughly and give as many details as possible.

• It is important to submit your application right away.

• If you want to receive benefits within the week that you applied, you must get in touch with the EDD by Friday.

• Benefits are usually received after three weeks from date of filing.

Filing Process

You can file your claims at the EDD through phone, fax, mail or via the Internet. Before filing a claim, make sure you have the following information ready:

• Your name and Social Security account number

• Your driver’s license

• Last employer’s name, address and contact number

• Details about your wages

• The last day that you worked for your employer

• The reason you lost your job

To file via telephone, contact an EDD agent at the agency’s toll numbers. The agent will then conduct an interview. Note that there are specific toll numbers assigned depending on the language that you speak. Languages that this service is available in are English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and TTY.

To file via fax, send a filled out DE 11011 form, or the Unemployment Insurance Application to the EDD. The form can be downloaded from the EDD website or you can get a copy from the state unemployment office.

To file via mail, send a filled out DE 11011 form to the EDD office. Take note that you may only use blue or black ink to write on the form.

If you want your filing to proceed more quickly, opt for online filing. Go to the EDD website and click on the “Unemployment” button. On this page you will be able to access the eApply4UI service. Click on the button and you will be taken to a questionnaire page. Follow the instructions accordingly and answer all questions accurately.
