How to File for Unemployment in Florida

 

The state of Florida extends unemployment assistance to individuals who have recently been laid off. Applications must be filed at the State of Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation.  

 

Eligibility Requirements

 

There are four criteria that applicants must satisfy.  

 

Monetary Conditions. Although the computations of the monetary requirements are done automatically, there are a few things you must possess overall:

 

• You should have had income during the first four or five quarters before you filed your application. This is your base period.

• You should have earned at least $3,400 during the base period.

• You should have gotten a salary in at least two of the quarters of the base period.

• During the base period, you should have earned at least one and a half times more than your highest earnings in one quarter.

 

Separation Conditions. It is important that you have lost your job through no fault of your own. You must have a valid reason for leaving your job voluntarily.  

 

Other requirements that you must satisfy to be deemed eligible are;

 

• You should exert genuine effort in looking for new employment. Keep detailed records of your job search as these will be reviewed.

• At the time that you file your claim, you must be able to physically work and must be willing to accept job offers.

 

Document Requirements

 

Prepare the following details:

 

• If you worked for the government two years before filing, you should supply your SF-8 or SF-50 form and proof of your earnings.

• Your Social Security number

• Names, addresses and phone numbers of past employers

• Your driver’s license

• Your alien registration number and the date your work permit expires, if you are not a citizen of the United States

• If you are a union member, the name and number of your union hall

• For applicants who prefer to have payments deposited directly to their bank accounts, provide account details

• If you were on active duty for the military two years before applying, your member 4, DD-214

 

Application Process

 

Applications for unemployment insurance can be submitted online or by telephone. You may also submit your applications at Florida’s one stop career centers.

 

To apply online, follow these instructions:

 

1. Go to the agency for Workforce Innovation website and click on the “File an Unemployment Claim” tab.

2. On that page, click on the “File a Claim” link.

3. Click the “Claim Form in English” button.

4. Answer the questions that you see on the pages.

5. You will know that you have completed the filing process once a page with your confirmation number appears. You will receive additional instructions on the page.

6. Please note that it may take you up to an hour to finish the online application process. You must finish filing within 72 hours or else the information you provided will be deleted.

 

To file your claims by phone, it is recommended that you call on Wednesday through Saturday as call volumes are usually largest during Mondays and Tuesdays.  

 

You may also opt to visit the career centers for job search inquiries.
