How to File for Unemployment in Michigan

People who have recently lost their job can take solace in the fact that the state of Michigan extends unemployment benefits to qualified individuals. A jobless worker may claim benefits for up to 26 weeks, as with most other states. You can file for application at Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA).

Qualification Requirements

Unemployed individuals must possess certain qualities for them to be able to draw unemployment insurance. There is also a list of reasons for possible disqualification.

To qualify for unemployment in Michigan, you:

• Must be a legal resident

• Have worked for the past 18 months under one employer

• Must have lost your job through no fault of your own

If any of the following criteria applies to you, then you may not be eligible to claim insurance benefits:

• You have an application for unemployment in another state during the past 12 months

• You worked for the government for the past 18 months

• You worked in a family-run business

• You were in the military for the past 18 months

Necessary Information

Before you can file for unemployment in the state of Michigan, there are documents and other important data that you need to prepare for the processing of your application. You must have with you your:

• Social Security number

• Personal Identification Number (PIN) that you used to contact MARVIN, the UIA’s automated system.

• Alien registration number and the date your work authorization expires (for non-U.S. citizens)

• Your employers during the last 18 months including their names and addresses, your salary, and dates of employment

Application Process

There two ways in which you can file a claim for unemployment benefits. The UIA accepts both phone-in and online applications.

You can access the UIA’s Unemployment Claim Filing System on Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The website details some helpful guidelines as you are going through the online application.

Fill in all required areas, otherwise your application will not be processed. Make sure you are truthful in the answers that you provide as the government penalizes individuals who are found to have omitted information or supplied incorrect data. Your claim will take effect within the week you submitted your application.

Here are the steps for online applications:

1. Go to the UIA website and click the link that takes you to the Unemployment Claim Filing System page. Read the guidelines thoroughly before proceeding.

2. Once you have understood all the information contained therein, check the “I Agree” button then click the “File a Claim” button.

3. You will then be directed to a questionnaire page. Move through the questions using the Tab key. The system will let you know that the process has been completed. You may then click on “Proceed.”

4. A confirmation page will appear. Print this page and keep it for future reference. This finalizes your application.

You can also file your claims by calling the agency’s toll-free number. You can call anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. The UIA toll-free number is 1-866-500-0017. For TTY callers, the number to be contacted is 1-866-366-0004.
