How to File for Unemployment in Nevada

If you have recently lost your job for reasons you are not responsible for, you may file for unemployment insurance in the state of Nevada. The agency in charge of processing applications for unemployment benefits is the Nevada Department of Unemployment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Eligibility Requirements

In order for you to be able to draw unemployment benefits, you must satisfy the following requirements;

• You should have earned enough wages within a base period.

• You should be capable of working at the time that you applied.

• You should be willing to accept work once it is offered.

• You should be completely unemployed or employed less than full time.

• You should be out of a job through no fault of your own.

Essential Papers

There are documents and information that you need to collect for your application. These are:

• Your Social Security number

• Your last two employers, their names and addresses as well as the dates within which you worked for them

• Your PIN if you are re-starting a claim that you’ve already filed

• Your alien registration number, if you are not a U.S. National

Application Process

The state of Nevada accepts online and phone applications.

Before proceeding online, remember that you need to answer all questions. You are going to need up to 30 minutes to complete your filing. If display pages are left idle for 5 minutes, and data screens for 15, you are going to have to start over as all the information previously entered will be lost.

There are Help screens that you can refer to if you need clarification. It is helpful to note that the DETR online system may not be compatible with some PCs running on Mac.

The steps for filing online are as follows:

1. Go to the DETR website and access the “File Unemployment Claim Online” button.

2. Once you have read and understood the guidelines detailed on the page, click on the “Go to File My Claim” button.

3. You’ll be taken to the Unemployment Insurance Claim Filing System page. Read the user agreement. Once you have understood the information therein, click on the “I Agree” button.

4. Additional buttons will appear below. Click on “I Would Like to File a New Claim.”

5. You will be taken to a questionnaire page which you will have to fill in. Click on “Submit” when you are done. The DETR recommends that you print the questionnaire page, along with the email address and phone number indicated before submitting it.

In addition to filing new claims, the system also allows for:

• Filing of weekly unemployment claim

• Changing you federal income tax deduction

• Changing personal information such as addresses and contact numbers

• Requesting for another copy of the form 1099-G

• Requesting for unemployment claim information

If you prefer to file an application by phone, you can call the following numbers:

1. 1-888-890-8211 if you live outside of Nevada or in its rural areas

2. 1-775-684-0350 if you are a resident of Northern Nevada

3. 1-702-486-0350 if you live in Southern Nevada
