How to File for Unemployment in North Carolina

Residents of North Carolina who have lost their jobs for reasons they are not responsible for, can file an application for unemployment. You can forward your applications to the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina or NCESC.

Do I Qualify?

In order for you to be eligible to collect unemployment insurance, you must satisfy the criteria set by the NCESC. These are:

• You should have lost your job through no fault of your own.

• You must register for work with the NCESC.

• You should file a weekly claim for the benefits that you request.

• You should actively look for jobs during the weeks that you claim your benefits. Your job search should take place on two different days and contact two different potential employers.

• Keep detailed records of work search as this will be reviewed by the NCESC.

What Information Should I Prepare?

Before proceeding with you unemployment application, be sure to have the following information ready:

• Your Social Security number

• Your former employers for the past 12 to 18 months including their names and addresses, and the rate at which you were paid

• The registration number of your former employers (refer to your W-2 form)

How Do I Apply?

The State of North Carolina accepts applications submitted online, via telephone or through personal appearance at any of the NCESC offices.

The NCESC website offers some helpful tips to help ensure that you file claims successfully. The application process may take more than 30 minutes so make sure you have allotted enough time for completion. If you are unable to finish the filing in one go, you can choose to “Save Work and Exit” but you should click this option if your session lasts more than 15 minutes. This ensures that all information you input will be saved.

While indicating an e-mail address is only optional, it is good idea to do so as the NCESC can send you a confirmation of successful filing plus other tips that will be helpful to you.

Additional help is extended to claimants in the form of job automatic job referrals. Take note however, that the NCESC will review your job search requests as required by employers that list with the NCESC. It will take three business days for job search assistance to be processed. Job referrals may also be requested via phone or walk-in visits.

To file your claims online:
