How to File for Unemployment in Ohio

 

Are you a resident of Ohio and are currently out of a job? The most effective way to help you recover is to apply for unemployment insurance. The benefits you get from unemployment insurance will help tide you over until such a time that you have found suitable employment. You can go to the Ohio.gov website to find out how the state of Ohio can assist you.

 

Qualification Requirements

 

To be able to collect unemployment benefits in the sate of Ohio, make sure you satisfy the following criteria:

 

• You lost your job through no fault of your own.

• You are devoting adequate efforts to job searches. You should have detailed, written accounts of your job search.  

• You were employed for 20 weeks and have earned enough wages during a set base period.

• Your minimum weekly salary during the base period is $210.

• You are able to and available for work.

 

Documents Needed

 

To facilitate the application process, you will need the following:

 

• Your name, address, phone number and e-mail address.

• Your Social Security number

• Employment history including:

• Your employers for the past six weeks including their names and contact details, as well as the dates within which you worked for them

• Any out of state employment for the past 18 months including names, contact details and employment dates

• Any government employers that you worked for during the past 18 months, including the SF-8 or SF-50 forms

• The reasons you became unemployed from each employer

• The name of your spouse and his/her Social Security number

• Names, birthdays and Social Security numbers of all other dependents

• Your alien registration number, if you are a non-U.S. citizen

• Your regular occupation and job skills

 

Application Process

 

The state of Ohio accepts applications via online and telephone.

 

To apply online, do the following:

 

1. You must first register at the Ohio.gov website to request for a user ID and PIN. These are important for you to be able to access the agency’s online services.

2. On the Ohio.gov homepage, click on the “Unemployed Workers” button at the bottom of the page.

3. Read through the page that you are taken to because this contains information vital to your application. Once you are done, click on the “Create a New Account” button.

4. You’ll need to read the “Release of Information” details on the page and then click on the “I Agree” link.

5. Type in your user ID and PIN and follow the instructions accordingly.

 

To help facilitate online applications, it is helpful to be aware of a few important issues. It will take you about 25 minutes to complete the online application process. You must receive a confirmation number for your application to be considered filed. If you cannot finish your application in one sitting, you have 24 hours to complete it, after which all information previously given will be wiped out.
