How to Qualify
In order for you to be eligible for unemployment insurance you must:
• Be unemployed through no fault of your own
• Must meet the set amount of base period wages
• Be capable of working
• Actively search for new employment
What Documents to Prepare
When claiming unemployment benefits in the state of Oregon, you will need the following:
• Your Social Security number
• Your telephone numbers
• Your employers for the past 18 months including names and contact details as well as dates of your employment with them
• The wages paid to you by your employers
• Your alien registration number if you are not a citizen of the United States
How to Apply for Benefits
The state of Oregon accepts applications through the Online Claims System. You may also file claims by phone. Depending on a certain set of characteristics, some individuals may be required to visit any office of the Oregon Unemployment Insurance Center (UIC).
Below is the list of steps for online applications:
1. Go to the Oregon.gov website and click on the “Unemployment” link to the left of the window.
2. Click on the “online Claims System” link. There are several services provided by the system. If you are a new applicant, click on “File Your New Claim.”
3. You will be taken to a page that details important application information. Read through this and once you are ready, click on the “begin Claim” button.
4. Fill out the questionnaire.
5. It will take you about 30 minutes to complete your online application. After you complete the questionnaire, a summary of your answers will appear. Print this page for future reference.
If you are going to file an application by phone, it will be helpful to know that the UIC’s lines are busiest on Mondays and Tuesdays.
If you fall under any of the categories below, you are required to either apply by phone or visit the UIC.
• You are currently out of the country.
• You have been employed outside of Oregon for the past 18 months.
• You worked as a merchant seaman during last 18 months.
• For the past 18 months, you rendered 90 days or more of active duty service for a branch of the military (excluding the National Guard or reserve unit).
• You applied for unemployment benefits in another state for the past 12 months.
