If you are a Rhode Islander who lost his job, you can apply for unemployment insurance. You can file at the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT). Claimants can draw benefits up to 26 weeks with a weekly stipend of potentially up to $528.
Find Out if you are Qualified
Applicants who may file for unemployment are those who:
• Have lost their jobs through no fault of their own
• Meet the set amount of wages during a base period
• Are available and actively seeking employment
• Are willing to accept suitable jobs
• Are physically and mentally capable of working
Prepare Vital Information
Before you can proceed with the application process, you should prepare the following:
• Your Social Security number
• Your driver’s license or ID number issued by the state
• The names, birthdays and Social Security numbers of all your dependent children
• Work history during the past 24 months including your employers’ names and contact details
• Your alien registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen
• The name and contact number of your union hall, if you have one
File your Application
Applicants may file for unemployment either by phone or via the Rhode Island UI Internet Claims System. It is suggested that you start applying within seven days from your last day of work.
To apply online, visit the Unemployment Insurance page of the Rhode Island DLT website and follow these steps:
1. Once you are at the Internet Claims System page, click on the “Click Here to Continue” button.
The page you are taken to will contain some important information. There are browser and computer requirements that you need to check up on as you might not be able to view the pages accurately if your computer isn’t compatible with these settings. Should you want more detailed explanations, you can click on the “Technology” button.
There is also an “Assurances” button on the page. Some applicants may be wary of filing their claims via the Internet. This page contains the security measures put in place to assure users of confidentiality and safety.
After reading the reminders on the page, click “Proceed.”
2. Again, read through the reminders on the page before clicking on “File a Claim.”
3. You will be taken to a page where you need to supply answers to questions.
4. Once you have completed all the questions, a page will appear informing you that you have completed your claim. It will also indicate your confirmation number.
5. Exit the site only after you have received the confirmation number, otherwise your application will not be processed.
6. If you wish to follow up on your application status, just go the website and follow the “Internet Claim Status” link. You will be asked to supply your confirmation number.
To apply by phone, you need to get in touch with the UI Call Center. You may call
