South Carolina residents who have recently been out of work can file for unemployment benefits. Unemployment insurance may just be the aid that you need to recover from this setback. The state of South Carolina provides up to $326 weekly benefits for qualified applicants. Applicants should file at the earliest possible moment because it usually takes up to three weeks before first payment is received.
Do I Qualify?
In order for you to be able to claim unemployment, you must satisfy the following requirements:
• You should be unemployed through no fault of your own.
• You should have been paid a minimum amount of wages within a base period.
• You should be actively looking for work and are able to work immediately.
• You should have worked for employers who paid taxes in your name.
• Report regularly to the local Workforce Center
There are certain instances where applicants may be disqualified.
• If you are out of a job because of a labor dispute
• If you opted for voluntary retirement
• If you quit your job without a valid reason
• If you refuse work offered by your previous employer or any other employer, and by the Workforce Center
• If you were discharged for reasons connected with the employment
Do I Have the Necessary Documents?
Before you proceed with your application, prepare the following
• Your Social Security number
• Your employers for the last 18 months including their names and phone numbers
• The pay rates and total amount of wages that you earned under each employer
• Your driver’s license
• Your alien registration number, if you are not a U.S. National
Am I Ready to Apply?
Once you have determined your eligibility and prepared the essential papers, you can proceed with your application. To file your claims at the South Carolina Employment Security Commission (ESC) you can either go through their online claims system or visit the local Workforce Center.
Once your application is approved, you can file weekly for your claims via the TelClaim system. Guidelines on using TelClaim are:

• 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 Sunday
• 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 Monday
• You will be asked to supply your Social Security number and PIN. When you first
call TelClaim, the system will ask you for your PIN. Choose a four-
• Once you have entered your Social Security number and PIN, listen to the instructions. You will be asked by the computer to answer questions. The voiced instructions will tell you which buttons to press on the phone to supply your answers.
• Do not hang up until the voice tells you that your claim has been accepted.
• If you have made a mistake in answering the questions but you have already put down the phone, call again before 6 p.m. the same day to correctly file your claim.
