Losing a job can be an extremely distressing experience. Unemployed individuals not only have to figure out how to cover their daily expenses, but they also have to worry about looking for new jobs. It is fortunate that Tennessee provides unemployment benefits to qualified applicants.
Eligibility
To be able to collect your unemployment benefits, you must:
• Be out of a job through no fault of your own
• Have earned enough wages within the base period
• Be looking for other jobs actively
• Accept suitable work that is offered
• Be physically and mentally able to work upon filing
Documents
To ensure that there are no delays with your application, make sure the following information have been prepared before you proceed with the application:
• Your Social Security number
• Your driver’s license
• Your address and phone number
• Information about all employers for the past 18 months
• Your last employer including his name, address, phone and fax numbers
• The last day you worked for your employer
• The reason you lost your job
Application
There are three ways to file for unemployment in the state of Tennessee. You can file online, by telephone or visit the Tennessee Career Center.
Follow these steps for online applications:
1. Go to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Online Services and click on the “Apply for Unemployment Benefits” button.
2. The information contained on the page is very important so be sure to read thoroughly before proceeding.
On the page you will see a link called “Guide for Receiving UI Benefits.” It is essential that you read this before you start the online application. Your unemployment check will not be sent to you if you do not read this document.
3. Click on the “Continue” button and you will be taken to the questionnaire page. Answer all the questions.
4. Once you are done, a confirmation page will appear. Print this page and keep it
in your records. If you supplied an email address, you will be sent a confirmation

You may not file your claims online if you:
• Did not work in Tennessee in the past 18 months
• Are on leave or have been suspended by your last employer
• Have served active duty in the military in the past 18 months
• Have had federal civilian employment for the last 18 months
• You worked out of state or worked for a Tennessee employer with an out of state address
