How to File for Unemployment in Texas

The state of Texas has in place an unemployment insurance program that is extremely helpful to Texas residents who have lost their jobs. Qualified applicants can receive benefits that are instrumental to their survival until they have found suitable employment.

How Do I Know if I Qualify?

Eligibility for unemployment insurance is determined based on three main criteria. These are:

Previous Salary. In order to qualify, you should have been able to accumulate enough wages during the recent 12 months. You will be paid a weekly stipend of anywhere between $58 to $392 depending upon the salary that you earned.

Circumstances of Unemployment. You may qualify for benefits if you are partially or fully unemployed but the reasons for job loss should be through no fault of your own.

Active Search for Employment. The TWC states that you should be actively seeking for full-time employment, register for online work search at the TWC website and be physically capable of working among others.

How Do I Apply?

There are two options within which you can apply. You can either apply online via the TWC website or call their offices or a toll-free number. You can phone in your application from Monday to Friday at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Follow these steps to apply online:

1. Have the following information ready before applying:

• Last employer’s business name and address

• The first and last day that you worked for your employer

• Your salary

• The number of hours you worked this week (the week in which you applied) and wages you were paid

• If you are not a citizen of the United States, have your alien registration number

2. Go to the TWC website and request for a user ID. You will need this to access the application page.

3. Click on the “How Do I Apply Online” button. Then click on “Apply for Benefits.”  Approval is issued after three to four weeks.

4. If you wish to follow up on your application, call TWC’s automated voice response system to find out about the status of your claim.

5. Once you qualify for unemployment insurance, you will be given a debit card where your payments will be deposited. You have to activate the card and select a PIN before payments can be forwarded to you.

What Else Do I Need to Do?

Please remember that in order to continue receiving benefits, there are certain things that you must do. Some of the things that the TWC requires are:

• You must make an active effort to look for jobs. The TWC gives claimants a set number of hours each week that you need to devote to job searches.

• Write down every detail of your work search including companies you applied to, contact persons and their numbers and so on. The TWC will ask you for evidence that you really did look for jobs in a given week and they will check up on the information that you give them. You can use the work search log that the commission provided to record your job search details.
