How to File Tax Online for Free

Filing for income tax returns is one of the most stressful processes that a tax payer must go through. Fortunately with Free File, you can now file your tax papers online, for free, via the IRS website.

Helpful Information

Because this is a fairly new service, many tax payers have a lot of pressing concerns about important issues.

Eligibility. You qualify for the Free File service if your annual income last year amounts to $56,000 or less. The IRS is committed to promoting online filing and it specifically targets people belonging to the low and middle income groups because these are the ones underserved by online community.

Charges. Use of the program is free of charge but remember that you must use the IRS website to access the program.

Usability. The Free File program is very user friendly. Additionally, if you can’t decide on a company, Free File will help you find one. Just click the “Help Me Find a Company” button and go from there.

Limitations.  If you file jointly with your spouse, the $56,000 limit applies to both incomes combined, even if one of you is earning below that amount. You cannot use other tax preparation software and then file your taxes via Free File. All preparation and filing must be done via the website.

Steps for Filing

Follow the steps outlined below and you are on your way to filing!

1. Go to the IRS website and access the Free File program from there. Once you are taken to the Free File page, you will see the “I Will Choose a Company” and “Help Me Find a Company” buttons.

2. If you want to choose a company yourself, click on the “I Will Choose a Company” button and find a suitable candidate from the list that you see on the page.

3. Once you have chosen a company, read through their eligibility conditions as each company’s requirements for the free service differ. If you are eligible for that particular company, click on the link and you will be taken to that company’s website. Proceed with your tax preparation.

4. If you have trouble looking for a company, you can opt to click on the “Help Me Find a Company” button. You will be taken to a questionnaire that you’ll need to fill out. This will help facilitate the search for companies providing free preparation and filing services.

5. Proceed with preparation and filing. Wait for a confirmation or rejection notice which will be sent to you through e-mail.

A Caveat

While it is true that the Free File service is free, there are issues that you need to be aware of.

In the middle of the tax preparation process, you may find that you will be charged a fee by the provider company that you chose because you are determined to be ineligible. If this happens, you can go back to scanning for companies that you are eligible for. You can also access low-cost filing services via the IRS website.

Free File is only applicable to federal tax returns and not state returns.
